Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to create detailed imagw of the organs and tissues in your body. The MRI scan is used to investigate or diagnose conditions that affect soft tissue, such as: Tumours, including cancer, Soft tissue injuries such as damaged ligaments, Joint injury or disease, Spinal injury or disease, Injury or disease of internal organs including the brain, heart and digestive organs. The MRI scan provides clear and detailed images of soft tissue.
On the day of your MRI scan, you should be able to eat, drink and take any medication as usual, unless you're advised otherwise. In some cases, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything for up to 4 hours before the scan, and sometimes you may be asked to drink a fairly large amount of water beforehand. This depends on the area being scanned. As the MRI scanner produces strong magnetic fields, it's important to remove any metal objects from your body. These include: watches, jewellery, such as rings and necklacespiercings, such as ear, nipple and nose rings, dentures (false teeth), hearing aids, wigs (some wigs contain traces of metal).
1. Contrast MRI: This is the most common and strongly used MRI, often suggested by doctors to diagnose a severe health disorder. In this MRI test, a gadolinium-based dye is injected through IV into the patient’s body prior to the examination. This helps radiologists generate clear and vibrant scans of multiple body organs.
2. Functional MRI: Functional MRI, also called fMRI, is performed to measure blood flow to the brain and check out the brain functions. Doctors recommend this MRI scan whenever a patient comes with a brain injury.
3. Cardiac MRI: Doctors suggest a cardiac MRI when they come across patients suffering from heart disease or suspect problems in blood vessels or aorta. They recommend an immediate scan when patients encounter a heart attack. The scan report shows a detailed picture of the heart, blood vessels, and the overall circulatory system.
4. Musculoskeletal MRI: Doctors immediately recommend a musculoskeletal MRI for patients suffering from joint problems or bone injuries. This MRI process helps doctors diagnose bone-related issues like herniated disc, spinal fracture, spinal cord compression, etc.
