Blood tests are common medical tests. You may have a blood test as part of a routine physical examination or because you have certain symptoms. There are many different blood tests. Some tests focus on your blood cells and platelets. Some evaluate substances in your blood such as electrolytes, proteins and hormones. Others measure certain minerals in your blood.Your blood plays a big role in your overall health and contains a lot of information about what may be going on in your body. That’s one reason why blood tests are a common medical test.
On the day of your MRI scan, you should be able to eat, drink and take any medication as usual, unless you're advised otherwise. In some cases, you may be asked not to eat or drink anything for up to 4 hours before the scan, and sometimes you may be asked to drink a fairly large amount of water beforehand. This depends on the area being scanned. As the MRI scanner produces strong magnetic fields, it's important to remove any metal objects from your body. These include: watches, jewellery, such as rings and necklacespiercings, such as ear, nipple and nose rings, dentures (false teeth), hearing aids, wigs (some wigs contain traces of metal).
1. Complete blood count (CBC): This test measures different parts of your blood, including red and white blood cells, platelets, and hemoglobin. A CBC is often included as part of a regular checkup.
2. Basic metabolic panel: This is a group of tests that measure certain chemicals in your blood, including glucose, calcium, and electrolytes.
3. Blood enzyme tests: Enzymes are substances that control chemical reactions in your body. There are many types of blood enzyme tests. Some of the most common types are troponin and creatine kinase tests. These tests are used to find out if you've had a heart attack and/or if your heart muscle is damaged.
4. Blood tests to check for heart disease: These include cholesterol tests and a triglyceride test.
5. Blood clotting tests: It is also known as a coagulation panel. These tests can show if you have a disorder that causes too much bleeding or too much clotting.
For most kinds of blood tests, you don't need to prepare. These tests are to see what your blood is like under normal conditions. For some blood tests, you will have to not eat (fast) for a certain amount of time before the blood test. This usually means no eating or drinking anything after midnight before the test. These tests are often scheduled for early in the morning.Your healthcare provider will let you know if you need to fast before a blood test.
In most cases, the sample is taken from a vein in your arm. You will be seated or lying down. You may be asked to make a fist. The technician will tie a rubber band around your arm. Once he or she sees a vein, the technician will clean the area and then insert the needle.
